Flex: Present and Future
NOTE: This meeting was recorded! Click here to stream the Breeze recording of the meeting.
2006 is Flex's big breakout year! With last fall's Flex 2 announcements Macromedia simultaneously unveiled significant pricing reductions and technical advances. Flex 2 is very compelling for rapidly building rich web experiences at a price point that even small design shops can afford.
To get us up to speed on all of the new developments, LVMMUG member and Flex Developer Renaun Erickson will walk us through both the history and future of Flex.
We will also have an introduction by Sho Kuwamoto of Adobe, co-lead of the Flex Builder 2 development team. Sho will be joining us via Breeze and will cover:
- Why Adobe/Macromedia built Flex
- Who Flex is for
- What problems Flex is good at solving
- What Adobe is trying to accomplish with Flex 2.0
For his presentation Renaun will demonstrate:
- History of Flex and its Future/Integration (as much as we know of it)
- Flex and Data Services (In Flex2 called RPC Services).
- Flex Builder 2 Alpha
- Example of a working application
This meeting offers something of interest for all web developers.
- Flash Developers. Flex uses ActionScript and components based on Flash technology. Flex 2 introduces the following new Flash advances:
- ActionScript 3.0
- Flash Player 8.5
- Remoting 3.0
- Flash Media Server Developers. Flex Enterprise Services 2 is announced to include real time data push and stateful communication with a SWF client, similar to Flash Media Server functionality.
- Dreamweaver Developers. Like HTML, Flex uses a tag syntax for creating user interfaces. Flex interfaces, however, result in a richness and ease of coding beyond anything possible using javascript.
- ColdFusion Developers. ColdFusion MX 7's Flash Forms gave a small sampling of Flex technology. Flex 2 now includes a ColdFusion Adapter. For more see this blog on "Why should a ColdFusion Developer care about Flex 2.0" and Ben Forta's "Building Your First ColdFusion Powered Flex 2 Application".
